PEARLS, FROM A DEEP SEA DRAWN

Manoj K Manttra’s paper based pen & ink drawings offer a number of artistic thrills. Often based on Mythological lore, as for instance the work titled Ravana singing, the works are steeped in a non-rational poetic element, that intrigues as well as holds ones attention in suspense. The often singing or ecstatic figures —denizens from the deeps of the artist’s subconscious, are don with a delicately fine needle work, as it were and are marked by strong evocative feelings. So that this body of drawings, of much finesses is no hit and miss exercise but the delineation of potent symbols which end up giving a fresh incarnation to what is India common knowledge, or those ideals that inhabit this vast and varied subcontinent’s life the artist combines excellent draughtsman ship with passion to remake a world of creative imagination to which on responds sensuously, as also with astonishment. Manoj has not set out to shock us out of our received ideas or image, but so that we may rediscover what is unconscious in us in to full contemplative awareness. It is as that though the artist dug deep into this culture’s literary foundations and then made it his self-instituted task to provoke us out of our clichés and amnesia.                     I believe that in these times of trifling artistic concoctions limited to time present, and Which all pass out of sight soon, Manttra is doing just the right things! ---stimulating our slumbering memories briskly so that we can really re-experience the visions salvaged from Times immemorial. Only few artists on the scene. have taken to drawing with same vehement zeal. These Works are dreams but which carry the feel of a permanent reality, that of our own inner minds.
